European Research Area Platform
The European Research Area Platform is the European Commission’s portal dedicated to the European Research Area (ERA). Its purpose is to support the development of a borderless European market for research, innovation, knowledge and technology. The platform connects researchers, innovators, public authorities, stakeholders and policymakers, while providing access to policy priorities, actions, monitoring tools, reports, news and events. The current policy framework is the ERA Policy Agenda 2025–2027. It brings together voluntary activities agreed by the European Commission, EU Member States, countries associated with Horizon Europe and research stakeholders. The agenda covers long-term structural priorities such as open science, research infrastructures and research careers, as well as targeted actions on emerging issues including artificial intelligence in science and research security.
The ERA is built around four broad objectives:
Progress is assessed through ERA performance monitoring and reports, including indicators, dashboards and comparative analysis of national research systems.
The Second ERA EU-Level Report highlights progress in areas such as open science, the European Open Science Cloud, research careers, research infrastructures, European university cooperation and synergies between Horizon Europe and cohesion funding. It also identifies persistent challenges, including disparities between countries, administrative fragmentation and insufficient coordination of research investment.
The platform also provides access to ERA news, upcoming events, policy documents, studies and monitoring resources.
In practical terms, the European Research Area is not a funding programme like Horizon Europe. It is the wider policy framework through which the EU seeks to integrate national research systems, improve the circulation of researchers and knowledge, reduce territorial disparities and strengthen Europe’s scientific and technological competitiveness.
