Action 12 - Digital Opportunity Traineeships
The Digital Opportunity Traineeships (DOTs) program aims to address the challenges of the digital skills gap and the increasing demand for qualified digital professionals in Europe
The Digital Opportunity Traineeships (DOTs) program aims to address the challenges of the digital skills gap and the increasing demand for qualified digital professionals in Europe. With 90% of jobs in all sectors requiring digital skills, and 42% of European citizens lacking basic digital skills, the program seeks to bridge this gap.
Launched in 2018 as a pilot project by the European Commission, DOTs provide higher education students and recent graduates from various disciplines with hands-on professional experience in digital fields that are in high demand in the labor market. The program focuses on strengthening information-communication-technology-specific skills in areas such as cybersecurity, big data, quantum technology, machine learning, web design, digital marketing, and software development.
Initially targeting higher education students and recent graduates, the program was expanded in 2021 to include higher education staff and vocational education and training (VET) students/recent graduates. In 2022, the scheme was further extended to include VET, school, and adult learning staff.
The key activity of the program is the DOT extension, which was launched as part of the 2021 Erasmus+ general call. The program aims to enhance digital skills for VET and university students and recent graduates in their respective fields of study. Additionally, it aims to enrich digital pedagogical skills for school, VET, higher education, and adult learning staff.
Overall, the expected results of the program include the boosting of digital skills for VET and university students and recent graduates, as well as the enrichment of digital pedagogical skills for staff in school, VET, higher education, and adult learning. By providing practical experience in digital fields, the program aims to bridge the digital skills gap and meet the demands of the evolving labor market.
