EU Competition Policy
Sector: Agriculture, Food & Fisheries
EU competition rules apply across the entire food supply chain, from the production of raw agricultural goods to grocery retail. While food legislation is highly harmonized, the complexity and length of food supply chains vary by product and market characteristics.

Competition Rules for Agriculture
- For non-agricultural food products, the same competition rules apply as for any other sector.
- Agricultural products receive specific treatment under Article 42 TFEU, which allows modifications to standard competition rules to align with the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) objectives outlined in Article 39 TFEU.
Fishery and Aquaculture Sector
- State aid rules in this sector align with the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), which supports economic development through financial assistance.
- From 1 January 2020, DG Competition oversees State aid control for fisheries and aquaculture, taking over this responsibility from DG MARE.
- Competition rules for fishery and aquaculture products are defined under Regulation 1379/2013.
