EU Competition Policy

Sector: Arts, Recreation, Education, Tourism & Sports

EU competition law applies broadly across all economic sectors, including the art market, recreational activities, education, and the dynamic tourism and sports industries. Recent cases have extended competition policy to areas like publishing and gaming, highlighting its relevance to diverse fields.

Key Applications

  • Sports Media Rights: The Commission has addressed issues such as the joint sale of sports media rights and exclusivity arrangements for ticket sales.
  • Tourism: A vital sector for the EU economy, tourism includes numerous sub-sectors, all subject to EU competition rules.

COVID-19 and State Aid

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the EU implemented the State Aid Temporary Framework to support heavily impacted sectors, including tourism. Approved aid covered various subsectors, such as:

  • Airports (shops, restaurants, ground handling, car hire).
  • HORECA (Hotels, Restaurants, Cafés).
  • Travel agencies, tour operators, and event organizers.
  • Passenger rail services, ferry services, ski-lift operators, health spas, and zoos.
