Batteries & Energy Storage

Batteries and energy storage are becoming central to Europe’s energy transition and industrial strategy.

As wind and solar expand, the power system needs more flexibility to balance supply and demand, and storage is one of the most effective ways to provide it. Batteries also sit at the heart of transport electrification, and their diffusion increasingly supports the electrification of other sectors.

This growing relevance brings complexity. Batteries are not only a technology story, but a full value-chain and sustainability challenge: critical raw materials, manufacturing scale, environmental performance, and end-of-life management all matter. That is why EU policy has shifted from a narrow focus on collection rules toward a lifecycle framework covering design, market access, transparency, and recycling.
In parallel, Europe has built an innovation and coordination architecture to strengthen its industrial base. The European Battery Alliance and Batteries Europe align priorities across institutions, industry, and research, translating strategy into roadmaps and projects. EU collaborative research is channelled through dedicated partnerships, while industrial deployment is supported by instruments designed to de-risk first-of-a-kind investments.

This section reorganises the content into dedicated topic pages so readers can go straight to what they need: energy storage policy and tracking tools, the Batteries Regulation and compliance timeline, the R&I ecosystem, funding and scale-up instruments, and the latest consolidated evidence on manufacturing capacity and EV-battery self-sufficiency.
