Beef & Veal - Market monitoring & prices

The EU monitors the beef and veal market in order to identify market instability, provide accurate information to farmers and processors on the market situation and to help public policy decision making.

There is an EU wide system of carcass classification, which alongside price reporting and other statistical information is the basis of the EU's price monitoring system. This is also used as a basis for the grading of carcasses in slaughterhouses and fair payment to farmers.

Every week Member States notify their representative prices and other statistics to the EU Commission.

Short - term
The short-term outlook is based on reflections of market experts within the European Commission's Department for Agriculture and Rural Development, using the latest data available. It is published three times per year (in late winter, early summer and early autumn).

Medium - term
The medium-term outlook, published once a year, consists of a set of market and sector income prospects elaborated on the basis of specific assumptions regarding macroeconomic conditions, the agricultural and trade policy environment, weather conditions and international market developments.
These assumptions imply relatively smooth market developments while in reality markets tend to be much more volatile. Therefore, the outlook is not a forecast. More precisely, the projections correspond to the average trend agricultural markets are expected to follow in a given macroeconomic environment were policies to remain unchanged.
