The Presidents of the Political Groups met several times to reach an agreement on the distribution of the following positions:
14 Vice-President posts of the European Parliament,
5 Quaestor posts,
the number, names, and competencies of the standing committees and sub-committees,
distribution of the positions of chairs and vice-chairs of the committees and sub-committees.
Election of the President of the European Parliament
The EP will vote for its President on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, from 10h00. Candidates will be announced at 10h00.
The President must be elected by a majority of the Members of the European Parliament for the first three rounds. In the event of a fourth and final round, only the candidates who received the most votes in the third round are voted on.
As of July 11, 2024, Roberta Metsola (EPP, MT) is the candidate announced by EPP Group.
Election of 14 Vice-Presidents and 5 Quaestors
The EP will vote for its President on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, from 10h00. Candidates will be announced at 10h00.
The President must be elected by a majority of the Members of the European Parliament for the first three rounds. In the event of a fourth and final round, only the candidates who received the most votes in the third round are voted on.
Parliamentary Committees
On Wednesday 17 July 2024, at 12h30-13h30, the Plenary will vote on a Proposal for Decision draftet by the Conference of Presidents on the numerical strength of standing committees. The deadline for the Proposal is Tuesday 16 July at 10h00.
The Political Groups confirmed the current 20 standing committees, plus 4 sub-committees:
Subcommittee on Security and Defence: 30 members,
Subcommittee on Human Rights: 30 members,
Subcommittee on Tax matters: 30 members,
Subcommittee on Public Health: 30 members;
Parliamentary Committees
On Wednesday 17 July 2024, at 12h30-13h30, the Plenary will vote on a Proposal for Decision draftet by the Conference of Presidents on the numerical strength of interparliamentary delegations. The deadline for the Proposal is Tuesday 16 July at 10h00.
The Political Groups confirmed the current 45 standing delegations.
The Election of the President of the Commission is scheduled on Thursday, 18 July 2024, from 13:00, with a secret ballot.
It will be preceded by a statement from the candidate, Ursula von der Leyen followed by a debate, from 09:00 to 11:00.
The vote is secret and requires a favorable vote from the majority of the Members of Parliament. If this is not achieved, the European Council will have to present a new candidate.
