Climate change and risk prevention
REGIONAL & URBAN DEVELOPMENT POLICY
With climate change taking place, the regions of Europe will also be increasingly affected. Already today, 7% of the Union's population lives in areas prone to flooding, while around 9% lives in areas where there are more than 120 days a year without rain. It is obvious that climate change has a major impact on citizens' quality of life, as well as on their safety. Life on Earth as we know it today has evolved over the course of millennia, during which time a balance has been achieved. The recent acceleration of climate change can only have devastating consequences for life and for society itself. For this reason, the EU helps the Regions of Europe to find solutions for their own development that are compatible with the preservation of the environment in which they live.
Cohesion Policy plays an important role in targeting investments to promote a transition to a more resilient environment. This includes the prevention of the most adverse consequences of disasters and regions’ preparedness for when disasters strike. Moreover, Cohesion Policy improves cooperation mechanisms among regions facing the same risks, in a cross-border context, which provides for more effective possibilities. It supports measures to strengthen efforts on climate-proofing, resilience building, prevention and preparedness.

The funding opportunities of the 2021-2027 period will help Member States and regions to develop risk assessments and they will boost the EU's overall efforts for climate change adaptation.
