Digital inclusion
Digital inclusion is a key priority for the European Union, aimed at ensuring that everyone can benefit from the opportunities presented by the digital world. Today, not everyone has equal access to these opportunities due to factors such as affordability, accessibility, and lack of digital skills. To address this, the EU has introduced initiatives such as accessible ICT, assistive technologies for people with disabilities, digital skills training, and social inclusion projects.
One challenge to online participation is language, as the EU has 24 official languages and over 60 regional and minority languages. To address this, the EU has invested over €200 million in promoting multilingualism online over the last decade. The Connecting Europe Facility also offers an eTranslation service providing multilingual support to digital services and public administration across the EU. The digital strand of the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF Digital) is part of the second generation of the Connecting Europe Facility. CEF Digital aims to leverage public and private investments in digital connectivity infrastructures of common European interest.
The EU is also promoting digital inclusion through other policy areas such as digital skills, active and assistive living, and social inclusion.
The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of digital inclusion, as many people have had to rely on digital technologies for work, education, and social interactions.
By promoting digital inclusion, the EU aims to ensure that everyone can participate fully in the digital world and benefit from its opportunities.
