EU-wide digital maritime system and services
To ensure safe, secure, and efficient maritime transport, the European Union has developed an integrated suite of digital maritime systems and services that enhance real-time information exchange, coordination, and compliance across Member States. These systems support a harmonised approach to maritime operations, from traffic monitoring to emergency response and regulatory reporting.
At the core of this digital infrastructure is the Union Maritime Information and Exchange System (SafeSeaNet), which enables Member States and EU bodies to share critical information about ships, cargo, and maritime incidents. Complementing this are services like the European Maritime Single Window environment, which streamlines reporting formalities through national single windows, and the Places of Refuge (PoR) framework, which ensures coordinated action for vessels in distress.
Together, these systems lay the foundation for a modern, digital maritime ecosystem that improves safety, protects the environment, facilitates trade, and supports a competitive and integrated European maritime sector.
