EU Pesticides Database
The EU Pesticides Database is an information tool that gives public access to key regulatory data on pesticides used in the EU. It allows users to search for information on active substances used in plant protection products, maximum residue levels (MRLs) in food products, and emergency authorisations granted by Member States for plant protection products. Its function is practical and informational: it helps users find regulatory data in one place, but it does not have legal value. The legally authoritative information remains that published in the Official Journal of the European Union.
Under Active substances, the database allows users to search for substances used in plant protection products, including those classified as low-risk substances, candidates for substitution, and basic substances, whether they are approved or non-approved in the EU. Some safeners and synergists are also listed, although these have not yet been fully assessed at EU level. The system also provides access to the latest updates related to active substances.
Under Food products, the database allows users to search for a specific food product, such as oranges, and retrieve all the pesticide MRLs that apply to that product. This makes it possible to identify the residue limits relevant to individual foods.
Under Pesticide residues, the database allows users to search for a specific residue and see the current or historical MRLs that legally apply to that residue in particular food products. It also offers a data-download function for MRL information, which is useful for research, analysis and regulatory monitoring.
Under Emergency Authorisations, the database contains information on emergency authorisations granted by Member States under Article 53 of Regulation (EC) No 1107/2009. These entries cover authorisations granted from June 2016 onwards, and users can search them through several parameters to identify relevant cases. The database also notes that the information is entered through the E-Submission Food Chain (ESFC) Platform, while earlier data from June 2016 to December 2022 were migrated from PPPAMS. Member States remain fully responsible for granting those emergency authorisations, and questions on specific cases must be addressed to the relevant competent national authority.
Under Data download and APIs, the system provides broader access options for users who need more than simple online consultation. Data can be downloaded directly, and machine-to-machine APIs are available for IT specialists, researchers and developers who want to retrieve pesticide information automatically for applications, analyses or research projects.
Overall, the EU Pesticides Database is designed as a central access point for pesticide-related regulatory information, combining substance data, food residue limits, emergency authorisations, downloads and API access in a single searchable system, while leaving legal authority with the official EU legislation and Member State decisions.
