Summary

EU started a revolution on plastics. From 2030 all packaging plastics must be recycled. Established maximum quantities of bags per person/year.

This eDossier will take you to the heart of the current European debate on the use of plastics a. You will to be an informed actor in the European debate on plastics. You will find the EU legislation in force and in preparation.

On July 3, 2021,  the EU Directive on Single-Use Plastics came into force. This is the first European Directive that bans certain types of plastic consumer products which, for their single use, are discharged in large quantities into the environment. The Directive was adopted in  May 2019 and decided new rules: ban of many single-use plastic products and fight against plastic pollution and marine litter.  The EU war against plastic left in the environment was born years earlier, when studies and research showed the harmfulness of plastic in the food chain. The plastic is now in our bodies and dirty all the waterways and oceans. Plastic is a catalyst for bacteria colonies and therefore a source of diseases and infections.

On 30 November 2022, the Commission presented a new holistic approach on biobased, biodegradable and compostable plastics and a proposal for amending and repealing Regulation and Directives on Packaging and Packaging Waste.

EU continues its work for strengthen European rules on the use of plastics, opening many new opportunities for the stakeholders to discuss with the European institutions for shaping the future of plastic.
