Europe Makes Cars Smarter and Roads Safer

Brussels, 15 June 2026 - The European Union has introduced one of its most significant updates to vehicle safety requirements in recent years. From July 2026, all newly registered passenger cars and vans placed on the European market must comply with enhanced technical standards designed to prevent accidents before they occur.

The new rules expand the use of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems and strengthen protection for pedestrians, cyclists, drivers and passengers. Among the technologies concerned are improved automatic emergency braking systems and driver distraction warning systems capable of detecting when attention is no longer focused on the road.

Additional requirements address forward visibility, tyre performance and safety glass. The objective is not simply to reduce the consequences of collisions, but to use sensors, cameras and intelligent software to avoid accidents altogether.

A New Phase for European Vehicle Safety

The measures form part of the EU’s broader Vision Zero strategy, which aims to bring road deaths and serious injuries close to zero by 2050. They also support Europe’s transition towards connected, intelligent and increasingly automated mobility.

Their impact will extend throughout the automotive value chain. Manufacturers will need to integrate more sophisticated hardware and software into a wider range of vehicles, while suppliers, technology companies, fleet operators and repair networks will need to adapt to new technical and regulatory expectations.

Europe as a Global Standard Setter

EU automotive rules frequently influence technical standards in other markets. By making advanced safety systems mandatory, Europe may accelerate their adoption internationally and reinforce its position as a global regulatory reference for vehicle safety.

The changes nevertheless raise important questions about production costs, driver responsibility, artificial intelligence, personal data and the growing dependence of modern vehicles on software-based systems.
