EUROPHYT
The EU’s EUROPHYT policy tool is a notification and rapid alert system for plant health interceptions linked to consignments of plants and plant products imported into the EU or traded within the EU. Its purpose is to help national authorities and the European Commission identify and respond quickly to plant-health risks arising from trade. EUROPHYT is run by the Commission’s Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety.
In practical terms, EUROPHYT supports the EU’s broader plant health and biosecurity policy by keeping risk data up to date and accurate. The system exists because rising trade increases the risk that new pests and diseases will enter the EU, spread under favourable conditions, damage the environment, destroy native plant species, cause major agricultural losses, and increase pesticide use. EUROPHYT is therefore presented as an operational tool for the prevention of pest introduction and spread.
The page also shows that EUROPHYT functions as a web-based network and database linking the plant health authorities of EU Member States and Switzerland, together with the European Commission and other partners.
It supports several notification types and is complemented by resources such as the notification procedure, the EUROPHYT network, annual interception reports, and monthly and annual overviews of interceptions of harmful organisms in imported plants and other objects.
