The European Commission's Single Market Programme has launched a new call for proposals aimed at addressing the issue of food waste. The call is part of the programme's Food Strand and was announced on June 14, 2023. This initiative demonstrates the EU's commitment to tackling the significant problem of food waste within the single market. Budget: €3 million

Brussels, 26 June 2022

Food waste is a pressing global issue that has detrimental social, economic, and environmental impacts. It not only leads to the inefficient use of resources but also contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and exacerbates food insecurity. Recognizing the urgency of the matter, the EU is taking proactive steps to combat food waste and promote a more sustainable food system.

This new call for proposals invites stakeholders, including organizations, NGOs, research institutions, and businesses, to submit innovative ideas and projects that aim to reduce food waste across the entire food value chain. The focus is on fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing to develop effective strategies, technologies, and best practices for preventing, reducing, and valorizing food waste.

By addressing food waste within the single market, the EU aims to enhance the circular economy, promote resource efficiency, and contribute to the achievement of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.

The Single Market Programme's Food Strand provides financial support to selected projects that demonstrate a strong potential for impact and align with the EU's objectives. The programme encourages cross-border cooperation and the exchange of experiences and expertise among participating countries.

This call for proposals reflects the EU's commitment to creating a more sustainable and resilient food system. It offers an opportunity for stakeholders to contribute to the reduction of food waste, fostering a culture of responsible consumption and ensuring the efficient use of resources within the single market.

This new initiative under the Single Market Programme's Food Strand showcases the EU's dedication to addressing food waste and advancing sustainable practices in the food industry. It seeks to mobilize stakeholders, promote innovation, and drive positive change towards a more sustainable and circular food system within the European Union.
Project proposals are expected to include:

  • Food waste diagnosis and measurement strategies
  • Prevention initiatives

Total budget: €3 million
