The EU rules on social security coordination protect the social security rights of mobile citizens. The functioning of these rules is assessed in statistical reports prepared by the network of experts on statistics on free movement of workers and social security coordination on the basis of data provided by Member States.

Statistical reports on social security coordination 2021

These statistical reports assess the functioning of the social security coordination rules in the following areas:

• applicable social security legislation
• cross-border healthcare
• unemployment benefits
• family benefits
• cross-border old age, survivors' and invalidity pensions
• maternity and equivalent paternity benefits
• collection of outstanding contributions and recovery of unduly paid social security benefits
• measures to tackle fraud and error

2020 Annual report on intra-EU labour mobility
The most recent report 2020 provides information on labour-mobility trends in EU and EFTA countries in 2018/2019. This report also looks into mobility of high skilled and of the consequences of demographic change for mobility.

2019 Annual report on intra-EU labour mobility
The report provides updated information on labour-mobility trends in EU and EFTA countries in 2017/2018. This year, the report also looks into 'mobility spells' (period of stay in the destination country).

2018 Annual report on intra-EU labour mobility
This annual report provides updated information on labour-mobility trends in EU and EFTA countries in 2016/2017. This year, the report also analyses the qualifications and the household’s composition of the EU-28 movers.  

2017 Annual report on intra-EU labour mobility
The report provides key quantitative information on labour-mobility flows and patterns in the Union and EFTA countries in 2015/2016. The following topics are analysed in the report:

• mobility of EU citizens of working age
• mobility of EU workers
• the role of language compared to other obstacles and drivers of intra-EU labour mobility between neighbouring regions
• mobility of health professionals
• EURES contribution to intra-EU labour mobility

With a special focus this year on the gender dimension of mobility.

2016 Annual report on intra-EU labour mobility
The Report provides key quantitative information on labour-mobility flows and patterns in the Union and EFTA countries based on the most recent available data (stocks in 2015 and mobility flows in 2014).
Following topics are analysed in the report:

• Mobility of EU citizens of working age
• Mobility of EU and EFTA mobile workers
• Return mobility
• Mobility at an older age: retired EU-28 movers

&2015 Annual Report on Labour Mobility
The main aim of this report is to provide key quantitative information on stocks and flows of EU citizens residing and/or working in another EU Member State/EFTA country, based on the most recent available data (mainly from 2014).
It provides

• an EU level analysis of the intra-EU labour mobility
• recent mobile workers –developments since 2013
• cross-border workers –definition, relevance, extent
• mobility of Croatian citiziens before and after accession

2014 Annual report on labour mobility
The main aim of this report is to provide key quantitative information on stocks and flows of EU citizens residing and/or working in another EU Member State/EFTA country, based on the most recent available data (mainly from 2013). It focuses on the main countries of residence of these movers, their characteristics (age, citizenship, length of residence).
It provides

• an indication of the main countries of destination in 2012,
• information on the employment rates and labour market status of mobile workers
• information on their professional status and
• information on their distribution across employment sectors and occupations compared to nationals,
• the mobility patterns of new young movers
• analysis of the education level of recent EU-28/EFTA movers, also in order to enrich the on-going debate in countries of origin on "youth drain" and "brain drain" with some figures,
• indicative examples of national sources for three selected Member States (Belgium, Germany and Portugal), to provide information on quantitative sources on free movement which supplements the EU-level figures.
