MOBILITY & TRANSPORT
The Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) is a key element in the EU's strategy to foster economic competitiveness and ensure sustainable development across its member states. Go to the TEN-T Corridors for all details.
The TEN-T program focuses on enhancing the interconnection and interoperability of national transport networks, including railroads, to facilitate the seamless movement of goods and people across borders.
European Coordinators and Priority Projects: A distinctive aspect of the TEN-T program is the appointment of European Coordinators. These coordinators are responsible for facilitating the implementation of high-priority, multi-country rail projects, ensuring that these critical infrastructural developments are carried out efficiently and effectively. There are six such priority rail projects, including the implementation of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS).

ERTMS Implementation: The EU has set ambitious goals for the rail sector, particularly aiming to implement ERTMS across six major corridors. These corridors are crucial as they handle approximately a fifth of Europe's rail freight traffic. The deployment of ERTMS is a strategic move to enhance the safety, reliability, and efficiency of rail transport across Europe.
Freight-Oriented Rail Network: Complementing the ERTMS corridors, the EU has also been proactive in establishing a rail network with a special focus on freight. This involves the creation of international freight-oriented corridors, designed to streamline and optimize the transportation of goods across the continent. These corridors are intended to ensure that freight transport is efficient, reliable, and competitive, thereby reinforcing the role of rail as a key mode of transport in the EU's logistics chain. The TEN-T program, with its focus on connectivity, interoperability, and prioritization of freight routes, is instrumental in shaping a robust and future-ready transport infrastructure in Europe, aligning with the broader objectives of economic growth, sustainability, and cohesion among EU member states. |
