MOBILITY & TRANSPORT

The European Commission's "Roadmap to a Single European Transport Area - Towards a competitive and resource-efficient transport system" outlines a strategic plan comprising 40 specific initiatives aimed at reshaping the EU's transport system over the next decade.

The roadmap seeks to enhance mobility, dismantle major barriers in critical areas, stimulate growth, and create job opportunities. Concurrently, it aims to significantly reduce Europe's reliance on imported oil and achieve a 60% reduction in transport carbon emissions by 2050.

Key Goals by 2050 include:
  1. Transition to Sustainable Urban Mobility: Elimination of conventionally-fuelled cars in cities, promoting greener alternatives.
  2. Aviation and Shipping Emissions: Achieving a 40% usage of sustainable low carbon fuels in aviation and a minimum of a 40% reduction in shipping emissions.
  3. Shift in Transport Modes: Transferring 50% of medium-distance intercity passenger and freight journeys from road to rail and waterborne transport, supporting more sustainable transport modalities.
  4. Overall Emission Reduction: These measures collectively aim for a 60% decrease in transport emissions by mid-century.
