As of 2022, the sector accounted for about 6.4% of total employment in the EU, employing around 12 million workers. The industry comprises over 3 million enterprises, most of which (95%) are small businesses with less than 20 workers. The sector contributes approximately 10.1% to the EU's GDP and represents 29.6% of industrial employment. The total gross fixed capital formation in construction within the EU was 49.7%. In terms of activities, 31.8% of the sector is involved in non-residential construction, 20.6% in new house building, and 29.7% in renovation.
